In this rare color video, we see fantastic documentary style coverage of the 1957 Monaco Grand Prix.
Despite a lackluster start to the race, Stirling Moss led the other favorites which included Collins, Fangio and Hawthorn. Coming out of the tunnel on lap 4, all sorts of problems ensued and as Moss passed through the chicane he sent debris from the destroyed barrier in the on coming racers. Fangio made it through the dicey areas fine, but Collins crashed through another barrier trying to avoid Moss’ mess, Fangio made it through and the unfortunate Hawthorn crashed into Brooks.
From then on it was Fangio taking the checkered flag, no doubt about it. On Lap 96 of 105, von Trips, a surefire 3rd place finisher at the time, blew his engine, leaving Brabham to inherit his place through good fortune, but he soon after was beset by horrible luck his Cooper t43 Climax shut off abrubtly 5 laps from the end…pushing his car from the Harbor to the finish line was an interesting way to go. When all was said and done, it was a memorable race as much for it’s bad luck and gaffs as anything else.
