The Amelia Island Concours and auction scene was very accommodating this year and had more than one thing for everyone. The weather was spectacular, though a bit hot on concours Sunday, but overall it was a welcome change from the previous two years where rain had caused the date of the show to be changed last minute.
The auctions were full of surprisingly nice cars from a quality standpoint, many of which brought big results per model expectations. A 94′ Toyota Supra sold by RM with roughly 12k miles sold for an unbelievable (to me) $173,600 incl fees further showing the up and coming strength of the 80’s and 90’s market. Also a surprise in the other direction was the sale of a W.O. Bently 6 1/2 liter by Gill and Sons body (original open coachwork) that went for a perplexingly low $714,000 at RM, further cementing the common thread among industry observers that non-big name coachbuilt pre war models, regardless of intrinsic quality, are going to have a hard go of it in the years and decades to come from a generational perspective.
For the casual observer things were definitely a bit reserved on the heavy money end of things with cars above the $1M mark much fewer and further between than in recent years at any of the United States big three auction weekends. Overall, the market seems healthy but perception is that it is a bit soft, not bad and certainly not on fire, but it’s also not that simple as a blanket analysis as some models continue to rise rather unexpectedly (or not).
A special thank you to all the old friends who stopped by and said hi at the Concours on Sunday, and to the new friends who got to see one of our restorations for perhaps for the first time. Also to everyone else who gave us a bit of feedback on what we brought to the show. It was an all around great day, a wonderful culminating concours event to a typically relaxing Amelia weekend!
