1955 Mercedes Benz 300 SL Gullwing For Sale

Chassis #5500109, Body #5500108 and Engine #5500121. All numbers are correct and original for this vehicle. Completed by the factory on February 25, 1955 and shipped to the US on March 2, 1955.

Dieter Scherfenberg of Houston Texas purchased the car in the early 1970’s from H.L. Gibbs, Jr. of Fort Worth, Texas. The car was used sparingly during his ownership. It was not until 1985, with the odometer showing just 46,125 original miles, that Mr. Scherfenberg commissioned 300SL specialist Scott Grundfor to conduct a 100 point body off “Show” restoration of the Gullwing maintaining its original colors of DB 050 white with original Roser 1079 Red leather along with the correct German wool square weave carpeting and tan wool headliner. The restoration entailed over 4,000 hours to complete. Shortly after completion in 1987 the car was shown at numerous Concour events winning first in class consistently. At the 1987 Silverado Concours d’Elegance, Mr. Scherfenberg’s stunning Gullwing was awarded “Best of Show” for post war vehicles. At that time Silverado was the most prestigious Concours in California after Pebble Beach. In the mid 1990’s the Gullwing was acquired by Sir Peter Clark of Pebble Beach California. Sir Peter sold the car in 1999 though Symbolic Motorcars to Scott Grundfor. In 2000 Mike Blanton of Nevada City, Calif. acquired the car from Scott. During Mr. Blanton’s ownership the car has been driven a total of 17,440 miles- the odometer now showing 63,880 miles. Mr. Blanton has been the International Gullwing Group’s “Historian” for many years and many of the miles were accumulated on trips to and from the annual conventions and club events. The car remains in near mint condition with only the slightest evidence of use- a testament to Mr. Blantons care.

The car has full belly pans, fitted luggage, Rudge Knock off wheels, tools, jack and K/O hammer, It also has the Mercedes Benz Classic “Zertifikat” of Manufacture.
