This 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing was one of the last Gullwing Coupes completed by Mercedes Benz at the Sindelfingen factory (shipped on March 5, 1957). Of the total Gullwing production of 1400 coupes produced from December of 1954 to May of 1957 a total of only 70 were constructed in 1957 making it the rarest and most desirable year of production. In terms of rarity you have the 29 Aluminum or “Alloy” Gullwings produced in 1955/6 followed by the 1957 Gullwing (70 examples). 1957 was ” the rarest (year) of them all”. Additionally, 1957 represents a “State of the Art” as far as the numerous mechanical improvements and updates the factory made over the 4 years of production.

General Information:
Dr. Dieterle reported the vehicle stolen from the garage of the Hospital for Special Surgery in New Your City on February 18, 1968. The car was subsequently located and returned. The Gullwing had been damaged, primarily right front-end fender and suspension damage. In 1970 the vehicle was purchased by world renowned Mercedes Benz collector Don Ricardo. Later in 1970 John Getz purchased the vehicle from Don Ricardo and began the restoration. John owned the vehicle from 1970 to 2004 during which time it remained in its original state under his ownership and control. The vehicle was stored in three garages for a period of 42 years. During that time it remained rust free, unmolested, in its original condition. In 2004 the vehicle was purchased by Gordon Joelson who commissioned Mercedes 300SL specialist Jon Cumpton to finish the restoration. The Gullwing retains the original: engine 7500041, body 7500030, chassis 7500030, front suspension spindles (right)65000348 and (left) 65000347, steering box 7500037 and rear axle 750001. The extensive body off restoration was finished in 2012. Upon completion it was sold to the current owner who sent the car to Scott Grundfor Company to check the car over and sort out any final details. Since completion the Gullwing has been driven only 345 miles.
The car comes with Rudge wheels; Becker Mexico Automatic Multi-band Radio, Matching Fitted Luggage, Window Pop Out Bag, Original Jack, Tools, Owners Books and K/O Hammer.
This rare stunning restored Gullwing is ready to show or drive.
