Mint Original Thistle Green Metallic
A marvel of motoring in its day, the third generation of the SL-Class, chassis code R107, debuted in 1971 and was available with luxuries such as automatic climate control, cruise control, and luxurious wood accents. The 4.5-liter eight-cylinder was the model’s first V-8 engine and featured aluminum cylinder-heads with Bosch fuel injection. The new engine was said to be capable of accelerating the elegant two-seater to 60 mph in just nine seconds, making it as formidable for its time in the performance department as it was as a statement-making luxury model on the road. The final of year of production for the 450SL model was 1980, the year the car offered here was sold new.
As per this exceptional low mileage 107 Mercedes-Benz’ original window sticker and original purchase invoice, the car was delivered new to Atlanta Classic Cars, Inc. in Decatur, Georgia. The car was sold new by the dealer to its first owner, Edwin Nalley of Norcross, Georgia on August 20th, 1980, for a price of $36,839. This 450SL was delivered new in the beautiful and rare original color of 881 Thistle Green Metallic and was upholstered in 134 Palomino MB-Tex. It came well equipped with a fuel injected 4.5 liter OHC V-8 paired to a 3-speed automatic transmission with power steering. The car was delivered new with climate control features, disc brakes, cruise control, light alloy wheels and electric windows among other modern luxury amenities. Further special options included a code 518 Mexico Cassette Stereo and a 746 dark brown soft top.
This final year of production 450SL would remain with its original owner, Mr. Nalley, for the next 35 years, kept in climate controlled environments and never parked outside as testified to by the cars current immaculate original condition. On August 15th, 2015, Nalley would sell the car to its next owner for a price of $45,000 with a mileage notation on the transfer document stating that the car had accrued a mere 8,293 miles since new. The car’s current owner, a collector of original condition Mercedes-Benz based in the United States, purchased the vehicle in 2022, and has since accrued several thousand additional miles, leaving the current odometer reading showing just 10,849 miles.
This exceptional, all original 450SL Coupe/Roadster is in a pristine factory original condition today, retaining both its original paint and interior along with original rubber, chrome and engine bay surfaces. The car drives flawlessly, as it did when new, and presents today in a cosmetic condition commensurate more with what one might expect from a car 40+ year old car with 500 miles than one with 10,000. Very few 107 Mercedes-Benz are a match for this superb example’s quality of originality, one would be hard pressed to find a similar 450SL that can match this car’s combination of sought after colors, condition and low mileage.
As a desirable, still very relevant and eminently usable performance luxury classic, this stunning, final year of production 450SL Mercedes-Benz comes dressed in the beautiful and rarely seen original color combination of 881 Thistle Green Metallic over 134 Palomino MB-Tex with a 746 brown soft top. The car comes with an excellent array of options as well as a history file containing its original window sticker, original bill of sale and other original documents from day one. The car has all original books and also retains its original aluminum data plate as registered to the first owner of the vehicle. This Mercedes-Benz is ready for collection inclusion as a standard bearing example of the 107 line of cars and is suitable for regular use and/or investment purposes.
