Superb R107 Mercedes
First introduced in 1971, the code R107 chassis Mercedes-Benz cars have remained a status symbol of luxury performance for over 50 years. Well apportioned with comfort features and built to the lofty standards Mercedes-Benz is has always been known for, this powerful luxury laden line of sports cars was produced for almost 20 model years and ended up being the longest running passenger car series ever produced by Mercedes.
The final iteration of the R107 Mercedes cars, the 560SL, remains a prized collection piece and an iconic part of the German brand’s historical lineup, with the 1989 examples now considered the ultimate version as the most advanced; a model year version particularly noteworthy and valuable given its status as a final year of production car. Equipped as standard with a 5.6 liter aluminum V8 engine, ABS brakes and cruise control, the 560SL has long been heralded as a robust road-going performer with safety and riding comfort present in spades.
Featuring air conditioning, power locks, power windows and a 3-speed automatic transmission in addition to a luxurious full leather interior and innovative safety implements such as drivers-side airbags, the 560SL is considered by many Mercedes-Benz afficionados as a truly modern German classic. The 560’s range of amenities, power and unusually smooth ease of use have issued the model a status that most who are familiar with the model would consider as one of Sindelfingen’s finest productions.
According to the original window sticker retained in the history file of this unusually original, sub-10,000 mile example, this 560SL was finished by Mercedes-Benz in 147 Arctic White paint over 272 blue leather with a walnut wood accented dash and a 744 blue soft top. The car came with a removable body color painted hard top, air conditioning, power locks, fog lamps, power windows, Becker AM/FM cassette player, alloy wheels, cruise control and a driver’s-side airbag.
This final year of production iteration of the 560SL was sold new to Foreign Motors West, Inc of Natick, Massachusetts on August 23rd of 1989. On June 16th, 1997, the car was purchased from the original private owner via Auto Exchange Boston by Joseph Federico of Dedham, Massachusetts. At the time of purchase by Federico, records indicate the car had 3,911 miles on the odometer. The 560SL’s current owner purchased the car in 2018 via Copley Motor Cars of Needham, Massachusetts with 9,250 miles noted on the odometer.
Today, this well preserved 560SL retains all of its factory applied original Arctic White paint in exceptional condition throughout along with well cared for original blue leather and wood in the interior. The car features high quality, dealer installed chrome wheel arch molding trim pieces in addition to smaller accented chrome pieces in the door openings, all of which are fitted precisely to the body and with obvious custom fit attention applied.
Since being purchased by the current owner, removable jump seats have been installed at the back of the cabin for extra passenger space. Every component of the 560SL functions as intended and the car shows no signs of accident or rust ever. As noted above, this special R107 boasts a documented 9,901 original miles and is in a condition commensurate with such mileage, a true case of low mileage being an expression of condition.
This truly top-of-the-line Mercedes-Benz model is a final year of production example; an all original R107 chassis 560SL Coupe/Roadster that is in show quality preservation condition and comes with its factory issued books, tools, original window sticker, a robust service history file and is currently fully serviced. It would be difficult to find a more well cared for 560SL with such a combination or originality, good history and documented low mileage in such a clean, attractive original color combination.
