Mercedes-Benz has had some crazy design ideas over the years that have evolved into spectacular automobiles. The C111 is one of those great cars that unfortunately never made it to production.
With its Wankel engine, gullwing doors and possibly just bad timing due to the oil crisis of the 70’s along with emissions laws starting to come into effect, the C111 never landed in the hands of its many potential owners.
When Jay Leno, the ultimate car enthusiast was younger, he dreamed of driving the C111. Imagining what it would be like rolling down the streets in what was essentially a supercar – a dream car. It took about forty years, but this episode of Jay Leno’s Garage is proof that dreams can come true – as Jay gets into the driver’s seat of the famous Mercedes-Benz C111.
This original 1970 C111 was put together as an experiment by Mercedes-Benz consisting of three-rotor, and later, four rotor Wankel engines. Today, this is the only running, driving C111 of the thirteen that Mercedes produced and is powered by a 3.5-liter V8.
