Scott Grundfor Company was on hand for another action packed weekend of collector car auctions in Scottsdale, Arizona from January 28th – 31st. As expected, huge volume was done by Barrett Jackson, Gooding, RM, Bonhams and Russo…but things were a little more subdued this year than the past few years with what seemed like the vast majority of lots hitting the low end of their estimates.
Whether it’s a sign of a weakened stock market, low oil prices or just the large numbers of auctions and cars within those auctions (all factors of note, but our bet is the latter), the Scottsdale Auction weekend for 2016 showed a slow down in the market. Our take is that it was a weekend of lots filled less with elite cars, by both make/model and particular examples on hand, and more with plain volume. There were of course many wonderful cars on hand and heaping handfuls of million dollar plus sales (particularly at RM) but in general the mood could best be described as tepid.
Despite the drop off from previous major auction weekends though there was still a copious amount of automotive capital exchange on display. Please find full auction lot links, weekend highlight sales picks and our 300SL lot links below.
