Another Scottsdale auction weekend, one quite unlike any other due to the ongoing Covid-19 concerns, has come and gone and done so with unexpectedly robust results.
RM Sotheby’s performance over the weekend epitomized the current general strength of the collectible car market generating a whopping $35,065,900 in total sales, almost unbelievably besting its 2020 Scottsdale results of $30,400,000. The top sale at RM was a 1955 Jaguar D-Type with period race history that sold for a stout $6,000,000.
Gooding & Co. leaned on their “Geared Online” platform for their annual Scottsdale edition of curated sales with a much reduced lot count due to Covid concerns where they hauled a respectable figure for the lots offered of $7,092,031 and a top sale of $1,936,000 for a 1966 Ferrari 275GTB Long Nose. Bonhams also moved forward with their annual Scottsdale affair and topped out their offerings with a sale of a 1959 BMW 507 Series II Roadster Sold for $1,809,000. And Worldwide Auctioneers, holding their Scottsdale offering this year from their home base in Auburn, Indiana, was able to hold a successful sale with a bevy of beautiful Woodie wagon’s on offer and a top sale of $571,500 for a beautiful 1934 Packard Twelve 1107 Phaeton.
Rounding out the five auctions that had results available at the time of this recap was Mecum, though from roughly a week earlier, who had a predictably massive sale of over 1,000 lots sold in Kissimmee, Florida, with a predictably high percentage of their offerings being American iron. Top sale at Mecum was a 1965 Shelby 427 Cobra Roadster which sold for a stunning $5,940,000…though perhaps not so stunning given the long term from new Carroll Shelby ownership history of the car. Notably, Mecum also sold two of the three 300SL’s available during the Scottsdale auctions across all auction houses, a 1957 roadster (featured below) that drew a big result of $1,210,000 and a 1955 Gullwing (featured below) that pulled in a stout price of $1,567,500.
Below are a our notable picks as Scottsdale auction week highlights, cars we were watching prior to auction because of their relevance to the market generally. Also, full auction lot links to results along with the market bellwether 300SL lots that crossed and sold over the weekend.
