* The following historical notes about the 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing, chassis 198 040 55 00531, written about in this short-story by Ken McGavin, were referenced from interviews with Drew Grundfor and other information derived from this special W198 race car’s unusually complete history file. This 300SL coupe was manufactured by Mercedes-Benz in 1955 just one month prior to the 1955 Swedish Grand Prix and then exported to Sweden for the race in July 1955. The car was transported and supported by the Mercedes-Benz Race Department for participation in the famous Sweden Grand Prix in August 1955 with the starting number 36. Under the management of famous Mercedes-Benz Racing Department Boss Alfred Neubauer, Mercedes-Benz dominated at the Grand Prix of Sweden in 1955 in the over 2 litre capacity Sports Cars class with a total of five 300SL Coupes entered, starting numbers 33 (Karl Kling), 34 (Graf von Trips), 35 (Erik Lundgren), 36 (Olof “Olle” Persson) up to number 37 (Bengt Martensson). The race was a success in every way for Mercedes-Benz with their 300SL Coupes winning 1st (Karl Kling), 2nd (Erik Lundgren) and 3rd Place – the 300SL Coupe featured in this short story with chassis number 198 040 55 00531 and starting number 36 driven by Olle Persson. In April 1956 this 300SL Gullwing was first officially registered in Sweden by Mercedes Dealership Philipssons in Stockholm under the ownership of Olle Persson. This 300SL Coupe has a fully known ownership history from new and lived its entire life in Sweden until 2018. In 2018 the car was sold to a major collector based in Germany and in 2022 it was acquired by a private collector of special rare Mercedes-Benz based in California.
