Going, going… but it’ll never go: Wooden 1955 Mercedes Benz 300SL Gullwing classic car sells for £5,000 on eBay

At least the teak replica’s new owner won’t have to pay too much on petrol
Five thousand quid is a lot to throw at any eBay auction – especially if the item on sale doesn’t actually function.
But car super fans willing to shell out nearly 6,000 Euros – as one punter has done – may think that a 1955 Mercedes Benz 300SL at that price, whatever its condition, is worth it.
Easily recognisable by the distinct gullwing doors, this motor may be a non-runner, but it may also be more suited to be kept in a huge display case, rather than a garage.
Hand-carved from wood and listed as being on sale in the German city of Duisberg, the 1:1 scale replica comes with front wheels that actually steer.
The seats also look to be authentic and in keeping with the original car’s style.
The dashboard and interior also appear to be very detailed, even if the motor is more likely to suffer from woodworm rather than a flat tyre.
And while the doors seem to look like they raise properly, they are not as thick as factory upholstered units.
The original sports car has proved popular with classic car enthusiasts, with chat show host Jay Leno having owned one.
Still, as costly as the teak vehicle may be, at least the new owner should make huge savings on fuel as petrol prices rocket.
